Howard Stanley Beverly, famously known as Frankie Beverly, the incomparable artist, founder and front man of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, has passed away. He was 77.
- His family announced his passing in a statement shared on his social media, saying “during this time, as we are navigating feelings of sorrow, reflection, and remembrance we kindly ask for privacy and understanding, allowing us the space to grieve in our own way.”
“He lived his life with pure soul as one would say, and for us, no one did it better. He lived for his music, family and friends,” they continued.
Simply put, Frankie Beverly was the man.
In a world of many who’ve been considered icons, there will only ever be one Frankie Beverly.
TV One joins music fans around the world in mourning this profound loss of a legendary R&B artist, songwriter and producer.
Earlier this year, we celebrated Beverly’s legacy at the 6th Annual Urban One Honors and saluted him as our Living Legend honoree.
It was an honor long overdue.
The Philly native made an undeniable impact on the Black experience and was integral the soundtrack of our lives.
Formed in the 1970s, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly became known and beloved for their sounds that soothed, transcended generations, and created countless memories.
When listening to Frankie’s voice coupled with those soulful instruments, anytime is the “Golden Time of Day”… you can find beauty in the “Joy and Pain”…Â you’re reminded that “We are One”… and you can embrace some “Happy Feelings”… because all those lyrics will make you feel just as special as a “Southern Girl.”

For 50 years, Beverly performed and toured with Maze, while fans came together, forming a sea of all-white attire, which was his signature.
He announced his retirement in 2024 in true Frankie Beverly fashion – rocking the crowd one more time with the “I Wanna Thank You Farewell Tour.”
Although the entire Urban One family is devastated by this loss, we are grateful we were able to give him his flowers while he was still with us.
His stamp on music is indelible and his contribution to Black culture overall will always be celebrated.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and all who have been and will be impacted by his incredible gift.
