Michelle Obama revealed she enjoys watching Momma Dee rule the kingdom on Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta in a recent episode of her ‘IMO’ podcast.

The former FLOTUS shared her love for messy reality television with her guest Taraji P. Henson. They spoke on the authenticity of Momma Dee’s outsized personality during the 1:04:10 mark of the recording. “Momma Dee oh chile,” exclaimed Obama empathically. “I know a Momma Dee.”

“Everybody knows a Momma Dee,” Henson told Obama as they bonded over their love of reality television.

Loving The Palace

“They sure do,” Obama confirmed. She went on to say that if you don’t see one in your family, “You just not recognizing Momma Dee.”

“You’d have to be lying,” continued Henson. She shared that she has a Momma Dee close to her heart. She refused to share who it was. “I have a Momma Dee in my family. I ain’t going to say who,” she added.

Momma Dee heard she resonated with the political powerhouse and the Hollywood heroine quickly. She loved the news. The mother and grandmother turned reality star responded with grace and joy right away after learning about her two new fans. She shared her feelings quickly.

“For me and my son @reallilscrappy to be recognized by two incredible Women is unexplainable!” she wrote in an Instagram post sharing the clip. “Thank you to the former First Lady of the United States @michelleobama & the amazing @tarajiphenson! Much Love from the Palace to you!”

Momma Dee represents many women. She shows us personalities that we don’t always see. She is unique and familiar.

Some look down on reality stars. There is no union for reality stars. Producers shut them out of certain spaces due to stigma despite their huge reach. More major celebrities like Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Seth Rogan are gushing about their love for reality television and embracing the people who showcase their lives on the small screen. Henson hesitated to share the titles of the kinds of shows she watched with Obama and her co-host and brother Craig Robinson. She rejoiced hearing the former FLOTUS is glued to Love & Hip-Hop like the rest of us. She laughed out loud at the discovery.

Loving The People

Obama explained why she loved unscripted content at the 1:02 minute mark. “I love those kind of shows where it’s just regular people, I think that maybe that’s the sociologist in me,” she said. She watches The Real Housewives franchises as well. They resonate with her. She recognizes the mayhem.

She said, “There’s chaos in friendships, there’s chaos in life, there is friction.” Her production company Higher Ground created another unscripted series The Later Dates in 2024. Obama launched Higher Ground in 2018. The choice to do reality television shocked some who might have thought she wouldn’t appreciate the format because of her high social status. She enjoys the mess. She loved the format and wanted to create more of it.

“People didn’t expect us to be doing unscripted. Right? But it’s like, well, that’s my taste,” said Obama. “I told my husband, I was like, ‘You watch golf, I watch unscripted,’” she continued at the 1:05:08 minute mark. Obama. “It brings me – I don’t know, it just settles me down.”

Henson noted the value of the “human connection” in the space. “At the end of the day, those are real issues,” said Henson about unscripted television.
