Rajon Rondo has officially graduated from the University of Kentucky, nearly two decades after he last wore a Wildcats jersey. The former NBA guard received his bachelor’s degree in communications this past Friday, marking a full-circle moment for the basketball standout who left college early to pursue a professional career.

Rondo was among seven former Kentucky student-athletes who returned to campus to finish their degrees after their eligibility had run out. His name appeared on a list of spring graduates shared by the university’s athletic department last week.

Rondo first arrived at Kentucky in 2004 and played two seasons before entering the NBA Draft in 2006. Selected 21st overall, he began his career with the Boston Celtics and quickly made a name for himself as a fierce competitor and elite playmaker. He helped the Celtics win an NBA title in 2008 and later earned another championship ring with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. Over his 16-year NBA career, Rondo played for several teams, including the Mavericks, Kings, Pelicans, Bulls, and Clippers, before finishing his career in 2022. He announced his retirement from basketball in early 2024.

While Rondo’s on-court accomplishments are well-known, his return to the classroom shows a different kind of dedication. It’s not uncommon for former athletes to go back and complete their education, but it’s always inspiring to see a player of Rondo’s caliber take that step. The University of Kentucky’s graduation ceremonies will continue throughout the weekend, and Rondo’s achievement is being celebrated as a proud moment for the school and its alumni community.
