Tyler Perry‘s passion project has found a home at Netflix after 26 years. With the 51-year old multihyphenate set to direct, write, and produce, he has cast Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer as the leads for A Jazzman’s Blues.
“I have waited a quarter of a century to tell this story and now is the perfect time and Netflix is the perfect partner,” Perry said in a statement.
The film is set from 1937-1987 and follows an investigation into an unsolved murder that reveals a story of forbidden love, deceit, and a secret that has been held for 40 years.

Perry revealed to Variety last year that he originally wrote roles in the film for himself, Will Smith, Halle Berry, Diana Ross, and Ben Kingsley. Nonetheless, he was forced to go in a different direction.
“I’ve aged out of it because the characters are all in their twenties,” he told the outlet. “So I’m looking for that new talent, for brand new faces who have committed themselves to the craft and who are incredible actors to play these roles.”
A Fall From Grace marked the beginning of his partnership with Netflix in January 2020 and was seen by 39 million households in the first month alone. A Jazzman’s Blues will primarily shoot at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta and will be released on the streaming platform this year.
